It is almost impossible to summarise - it contains roughly the same amount of research as a PhD thesis - and Bryan in fact was awarded an honorary degree by Sunderland University!

• The Tale of One Bad Rat

  

  In a career full of extraordinary comic achievements this is one of the most amazing: Bryan originally set out to write a very accessible story about a girl leaving home and living in the Lake District of England. When writing the plot summary he decided that the reason she was leaving home was due to childhood sexual abuse: but - when he researched the issues further he concluded that this had to be the absolute central point of the whole novel, that this was so significant that the whole comic had to be about the heroine coming to terms with what had happened. Now: I am not saying that he succeeded with honour and integrity... - but this comic is now used in the treatment of childhood sexual abuse . If I am proud of anything I have done in my life it is publicising this comic and getting more such victims to read it, and to be helped to heal by it.

  The Homogenous comic is a collaboration between Bryan Talbot and Neil Gaiman with inks by Mark Buckingham and letters by Steve Craddock. It was a protest against proposed homophobic legislation in the UK in 1988 and showed what would happen if all fey and homosexual influences were removed from society. Bryan said "It appeared in the benefit comic AARGH! (Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia) published by Alan Moore's Mad Love imprint and was my first collaboration with Neil." • An open letter to a comics virgin

  

  This strip by Bryan was published early in 2013 and was specially commissioned by The Author magazine to introduce members of the Society of Authors to the medium of comics and the form of the graphic novel. First published in 1890, and featuring articles by writers such as HG Wells, Bernard Shaw, EM Forster and Lord Tennyson in its long history, this is the very first time it has included a comic strip!
